Tip 3:  H1 Title Tags Tell Google Which Words to Focus On
..............................................................................................................

Add an <h1> tag with keywords near the top of your page.

Heading tags (<h1>, <h2>, <h3>) show Google search engines what the main topic of your content is.  Use an h1 tag near the top of each page of your site.  Just as you would do with a title tag, you'll want to make sure that each h1 is unique to the page.

I usually make my h1 tags include the same keywords as the title tag, but I rephrase it in different words.

Example:

If the title of my page is:  "Purebred Cocker Spaniel Puppies - Georgia Breeder", I might make the h1 tags read, "Cocker Spaniel Puppies: Purebred by a Licensed Breeder in Georgia"

It says the same thing, but it's worded in a different way.  This will catch different phrasing in search keywords.

Feel free to use h2, h3, and h4 headings as well to boost keyword emphasis, but bear in mind that h1 headers seem to have the biggest effect on SEO.

Secret Trick:  Some people don't like huge fonts on their website - and that's fine.  Just because you have an h1 header, doesn't mean you have to have a huge font.  You can change the size of an h1 header like this:

<h1><font size="1">This is my small header.</font></h1>

Important note:  All WYSIWYG website editors will let you change the font type and size, but some do not support h1 tags.  If your WYSIWYG website editor does not, you may need to insert the h1 tags manually.  It takes time, but it pays off when your site ranks well in the searches.

H1 Tags Tell Google, "This is important."
