Tip 2:  Change the Words in Your Title Tags
..............................................................................................................

Be sure every page's <title> tag is different.

Every page should have a unique title.  I know it's a pain in the neck to write a new title for every page on your site, especially if you have hundreds of pages.  But it does pay off.  Google wants to see that each page is unique and it wants to classify the content of page page as specifically as it can.

Example:
Imagine I own a company called Necktie City and I sell, of course, neckties.  I wouldn't write Neckties as the title for each page on the site because Google wants to index and categorize the unique content of each page.  I would use a different title on each page, such as:

  • Spiderman Neckties - Ties
  • Green-striped Neckties - Ties
  • Extra Long Ties - Neckties
  • Clown Neckties - Ties
  • Regis Philbin's Ties - Neckties

Notice also:  Each page has the words tie and necktie in the title.  Some people will use the word necktie in their searches, while others will simply call it a tie.  I included both keywords on the title of every page so people will find it no matter which term they use.
