Get as many links as possible from .edu and .org sites.
Many people believe that links from .edu and .org domains are given more importance than links from .com, .net, and other domains.
I'm not sure I believe it myself. I think .edu domains and .org domains tend to be older, more credible sites. Because of this, they do tend to rank well. But I don't think the letters at the end of the domain are really what matter most. I think it's the quality and age of the content.
Either way, links from these sites can only help, so get as many as you can. If you're a graduate, try approaching your Alumni organization.
