Honest Tips for Increasing Traffic to Your Website

(c) 2010 - Win Google's Love: Increasing Website Traffic - Use a Title Tag
Increase Website Traffic
Tip 1:  Put Important Words in Your Title Tag
..............................................................................................................

The text in your title tag appears at the top of the browser window when your web page loads onto a computer.  Most of the time, it will also appear as the clickable listing in search engine results pages.

Your title should be long enough to explain the content of the page clearly, but short enough to prevent truncation.  Truncation is when a search engine reads a certain number of characters in the title, then ignores the rest.  As a general rule, keep the length of your title below 150 characters.

When writing titles, remember each one should contain keywords that you are trying to target, and to help search engines be people-friendly, something catchy that people will want to click on when it appears in the Google search results include the exact phrases people will be searching for

Example:

Let's say you have a Website that sells gold coins.  The name of your company is Shiny Golden Pieces.

Don't use Shiny Golden Pieces as the title of every page.  In the first place, you want each page to have a unique title (see the next tip for more information).  Secondly, someone who wants to buy gold coins probably wouldn't be typing Shiny Golden Pieces into the Google search bar!

You could use Gold Coins as the title of your homepage, but chances are there will be a thousand other sites with the same title, targeting the same keyword.

Instead, consider using more specific phrases that describe what you do, such as:
  • Gold Coin Sales and Appraisals
  • Rare International Gold Coins
  • We Buy Gold Coins

These are called long tail phrases – more later!

Or, write titles that will catch people's eye and target their search terms at the same time.
  • Best Prices on Gold Coins
  • Affordable Gold Coin Dealer

If you do want to include the name of your company on the homepage title, add it after your targeted keywords, like this:
  • Best Prices on Gold Coins - Shiny Golden Pieces
  • Gold Coin Sales and Appraisals - Shiny Golden Pieces

Sample title tag:
<title>Best Prices on Gold Coins - Shiny Gold Pieces</title>

In my opinion, the title tag is and has always been the single most important thing to remember when optimizing your site for search engines.  If you pull only one important lesson from this book, let it be this:  Add keywords and phrases to your title tag.
